Dr. Samaha spent the afternoon Braiding Sweetgrass with Michael Smalls and Dino Badger -Gullah elders from Lowcountry, South Carolina.

Sweetgrass basket sewing is a craft that originated in Sierra Leone West Africa, and was brought to the low country by enslaved African people where basketry was first used for the harvesting of rice, fruit and vegetables on the plantations and later used for decorative purposes.

Michael and Dino are seventh generation basket weavers who come from descendants of the Laurel Hill plantation of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Born Global continues to use chapters from Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass to develop biomimicry curricula that aims to deepen and broaden our interns' relationship with the living world.
